On Tuesday, October 19, 2010 at approximately 10:30 am, a riot began between 126 Black and Hispanic inmates at Calipatria State Prison. It began on Yard 1 in A-Facility wherein 2 warning shots were fired. Then it spread to Bldg A3 wherein 2 more shots were fired critically injuring those inmates. Fighting continued in Bldg A1 wherein an additional 2 warning shots were fired along with the use of chemical agent grenades and mace which quelled the riot. Approximately 14 inmates were injured and at least 6 inmates were taken to the hospital. Weapons were found on the yard and in both buildings. The reason for the riot has not been determined and the entire institution is on lockdown. No staff were injured.
